When it comes to dog training, agility is one of the main aspects that are greatly considered. Agility is a dog sport in which a handler and her dog run as a team through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. The goal in any dog agility competition is to execute each piece of equipment correctly without any disqualifications.

Basically, an agility course is rather like an obstacle course with standard elements that each dog must pass through in order to complete the run and receive a qualifying score. If a single element is missed, the team is disqualified. This course consists of jumps, hoops and obstacles that you can set up for yourself. You can visit your local pet shop for this equipment. The basic elements of dog agility equipment are:

The weave poles are a series of thin poles attached to a straight plank base. The a frame is a ramp with a strong incline and equal decline. A-frame is painted a bright color, usually yellow, forming the contact zone, onto which the dog must place at least one paw while ascending and descending. The dog walk is another type of ramp. The two end planks form ramps leading up to and down from the center plank. The teeter is a long plank on a fulcrum that each dog must mount at one end and walk across to the other end.The tunnel is a long tube each dog must run through. The tunnel is constructed of flexible vinyl and wire, such that it can be configured in a straight line, or in a variety of curves. The chute is similar to the tube at the entry point, but the rest of the chute is simply nylon without the hoops to support it, so dog are basically running blind through this element.Jumps are the same as you would find at an obedience trial, and the pole height is set according to the size of the dog.The tire is suspended on a frame and each dog must jump through it on its way around the course. There are several national and international agility organizations with each having its own regulations and standards for dog agility equipment.

Jack Russell terriers are high in energy and need lots of physical activity to stay happy and calm. Jack Russells are agile dogs, having been bred to chase foxes and badgers out of their dens. They are fast runners and good at jumping. Agility trials take place over a field of obstacles, such as tunnels, teeter-totters, lines of upright poles, narrow walks, hoops, and other fun toys.

Toys are available for backyards, or you can make your own if you are creative. An online search reveals a large array of agility equipment vendors to choose from. Or you can make a simple hurdle using a pile of wood or plywood.

Before beginning agility training, check with your veterinarian. Be sure your dog has no back problems or other health problems that could be exacerbated by exercise.

Dogs respond to enthusiasm, so when you are about to begin dog training say,

Do you give consideration to the thought of training your golden retriever for agility or sporting activity? Maybe you are actually hoping to undertake various levels of golden retriever training. Well, be informed that agility training is among the most intricate dog training events. But the truth is, it is never that tough to accomplish, particularly if you are motivated enough to complete the process. So, do you wish to train your dog for agility contests?

Golden retrievers are among the most active, agile and athletic dog breeds worldwide. You can make your goldie perform a multitude of impressive tasks and tricks, and can even train him as a service or therapy dog. Whilst golden retriever training may take some precious time, you certainly can get the best results if you use the best training strategies. And when it comes to training for agility, it is prudent that you are cognizant of its essence and positive aspects. If you would like to maximize and/or test your goldie’s physical capabilities, his patience, compliance, sense of balance and focus, then training him for agility can definitely do just fine. Aside from the fact that agility training is the most beneficial way to further enhance your golden retriever’s natural skills and improve his physical characteristics, it is also the most pleasurable and effective way of establishing your relationship with your pet. You get to build and challenge your teamwork as well as your leadership and your dog’s trust to you, his master. Moreover, such training is yet another fascinating and beneficial way of putting your obedience training to test.

In this type of training, your golden retriever would be trained the best ways to navigate around, over, under and inside or out of numerous training obstacles. Your dog must be able to finish the obstacle courses in the shortest possible time and with little or no goof ups at all. Poles, hoops, balance beams, tunnels, bars and stairs are a few of the obstacles or equipments employed in an agility or sport-related training. Of course, you are still the one who’s going to be in command of your pet. You will be the one to directly command your golden dog, persuade him and praise him for every phase fulfilled. Indeed, positive reinforcement is the key.

Training your golden retriever for agility is easier, more fun, safe and outstanding if your dog has already finalized the basics of proper socialization and obedience training. In fact, an obedience-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained and properly-socialized dog is less complicated to deal with during any golden retriever training program.

Therefore, make sure that you first undertake the basics of dog training before intending to undergo the many more elaborate stages. You must be able to competently manage your dog so that you can make him behave wherever he is or regardless of the distractions. It’s best to introduce him to several places and get him accustomed to working with various tools or equipments. Your dog should also understand how to deal with other dogs and people.

Article by Boing Vitunov

Dog agility is really a spectator sport that consists of dogs racing through a strong obstacle course while being guided with a handler. The actual race is judged within the agility dog’s speed in addition to accuracy. Numerous dog agility courses and obstacles are utilized for each race, or perhaps trial, to help keep the race challenging for the handlers and the pet dogs.

Some of the different types of common obstacles used in dog agility are dog agility jumps, tunnels and contact obstacles. Singe bar jumps in which the dog jumps over one bar are common as are triple jumps that the dog jumps over in a row. Jumps are same as you would find at an obedience trial, and the pole height is set according to the size of the dog.

The Tunnel is a long tube each dog must run through. Contact obstacles are featured in dog agility and they are angled and/or suspended boards that dogs must either walk or run on. These contact obstacles have painted yellow ends that the dog must either enter or exit on.

The Weave Poles are a series of thin poles attached to a straight plank base. The dog must enter the weave at the first two poles and pass through the space between every pole in quick succession. It’s truly amazing to watch a dog moving left and right at breakneck speed on its way through the poles and then buzz off to the next element its handler is directing it to.

A lot of dog agility regulations state express that an agility dog needs to be at least six months old to compete. Dogs really should be examined by a veterinarian before becoming involved with dog agility to make sure that the puppy is healthy enough to engage in the sport without becoming injured or other problem. Agility training is gradually to get dog used to the sport so to increase the height of the jumps at a rate that is safe and comfortable to the dog.

Low contact obstacles are used to start with and the handler gets your dog used to a reward system of food treats and praise. As the dog gradually gains practical experience, much more contact obstacles of different kinds and heights are introduced. The handler teaches dog more verbal cues for direction with the courses as the agility dog gains more experience.

If you ever haven’t yet watched a new dog agility trial, you no longer know what you’re not often known. See it as the doggie Olympics, and you’d be about the right track, as the dogs who compete in these sporting events usually are highly trained and conditioned athletes.

Tunnel bags contain the most popular agility tools that you would need.Tunnels are available in different lengths, depending on how you plan on using the tunnel with your dog. For dog trials in dog show competitions, you should use a Agility tunnel that is between ten and twenty feet long. If you are training your dog for a competition trial, you should get a tunnel that is twenty feet long because you can shorten a tunnel but you cannot shorten a agility tunnel. Some dog agility tunnels are lightweight for their size and are easily moved into different locations. Small dogs can use the lightweight dog agility tunnels.Unless a agility tunnel specifies that it can used by a very large dog, it is recommended that you keep the large and heavy breeds, such as a St. There are dog agility tunnels made of sturdier material that can handle the traffic of the larger dog breeds.
When thinking about starting agility training for your dog, an important thing to consider is his or her overall health. It’s important that, if you have your dog competing in agility trials, you are aware of his nutrition and health needs and you do all you can to ensure that your dog is healthy, happy and ready to compete. That means you must take special care with his diet and nutrition needs.

The quality of your dog’s nutrition is essential. Consider him as the athlete and you as his trainer. You should consider feeding your dog as the only way to properly prepare him for the rigors of agility training.

It’s very important that your dog be in good overall health before you even consider training him for agility activities, but he should also be watched while he’s competing to ensure that he doesn’t injure himself or become ill. Dogs who participate in agility training can develop a number of injuries. These include:

* Carpal injuries — Through the repetitive movements that are required for agility activities, dogs can develop injuries to their carpals and wrists. You should be aware of how to treat such injuries. * Kennel Cough — (Infectious Tracheo-bronchitis) is highly contagious and is a relatively innocuous problem for healthy dogs but can cause problems for older dogs or those in poor health. Generally, any dog that’s found to have kennel cough will be restricted from participating in agility trials, but your dog can contract it before the contaminant is identified. * Heatstroke — Closely linked to dehydration, your dog can suffer from being in the sun all day, competing and being excited to see other dogs and people. You should be aware of the signs of heat stroke, as well as its prevention and treatment. * Shoulder injuries — If your dog is very competitive, he might develop a shoulder injury, largely due to the impact of the weight on his shoulder as he moves through an agility course. There are various treatments for these types of injuries, depending on the degree of injury. * Your dog might also deal with ticks, dog bites, vomiting, foreign objects in the feet and other areas, and other general impact injuries.

In general, if your dog is healthy going into agility training and trials, he will do fine when competing, but be aware of the minor and major injuries he might suffer.

As a rule, agility training should start while the pet is still a puppy. However, owners could still facilitate training with older dogs. The question “when is the dog considered old for agility training” is central to choosing when to start training the dog. Being “old” greatly varies from dog to dog, from the extent of a dog’s experience to the innate and natural tendencies it has. In short, there is no specific age at which the dog should be restrained from training. However it is always far easier to start training with much younger dogs since their learned behaviors are still not rooted into their habits. For choosing old dogs for training, the handler should not create the impression that the dog would no longer learn so there’s no need to waste time. The attitude of the dog as much as that of the trainer is both highly essential to faster learning. The more dedicated and patient the owner is the faster the dog learns. There are several approaches to starting training for agility. A few of which are discussed here briefly: Physical exercise. The introduction to agility training should start with physical exercises. If the handler has enough interest to dedicate on training the dog, the age will no longer matter for it is the condition that will rule over. Simple exercises like jumping or hopping may agitate the dog and encourage him to move a little bit. For puppies, these exercises are much easier to do since they have enough energy to use. Let him play aroundLike teaching little children, the easiest approach to agility training for younger puppies is to turn the exercises into a series of games. The majority of puppies are capable of passing through tunnels and chutes so take advantage of this chance and introduce the tunnels, obstacles and the training area itself as huge play ground. This approach will create positive impressions on him which will also prepare him for future training. Promote his agilityIf you don’t have a sufficient area for setting up obstacle courses, it is best to use certain games that also encourage agility. Simple equipment like improvised tunnels or walls could be made to augment training. Keep it shortDogs don’t experience passion when it comes to activities but they have the innate desire to please their owners. This means that they don’t get devoted unless they are rewarded for good actions they have made and that you show your favor for their actions. Their attention span is also very limited so they could not continue training for extended hours. If you want to start training your dog for agility, establish the rule that you should keep each training session and each lesson as short as possible. You don’t have to finish everything in one sitting. You should divide each exercise into sections that the dog could easily understand. Also never end with a negative note. Always ensure that the dog finishes each exercise with praise. Training your dog for agility does not lie on how old or young he is, it lies in the foundation of responsiveness, independence, drive to work alone and to follow the command, and your desire to work with him with enough patience and knowledge of his capacities.

Agility training for dogs is a sport that is quickly growing in popularity, and is a terrific outlet for your dog’s abundant energies. The agility training gets him into the best shape of his life, and also increases his mental sharpness through problem solving.

A dog that is well exercised and happy is much more likely to refrain from bad behaviors. Following so much activity, he will be more in a mood to kick back than to cause any problems.

Agility training isn’t for all breed. For instance, dogs descended from the working breeds such as Retrievers, Shepherds, Herding Breeds (collies, cattle dogs) Spaniels and Terriers are physically more suited for the agility training than very large breeds such as Great Danes, St. Bernards or a Mastiff. It’s all I can do to get a Bullmastiff I dog sit to even go for a brisk walk. The very large breeds tend to tire out too quickly and aren’t gifted by nature for this type of activity. If a breed of dogs is too small, it is also unable to meet the physical demands of agility training-for instance, they can’t make it over the jumps.

If your dog is very athletic and energetic and of the right size he may make a good candidate for agility training. Make sure you have already obedience trained your dog before trying to teach him the agility exercises. Be sure that you include dog training hand signals during your dog’s obedience training. That is because your dog will really need to listen and pay attention to your directions and hand signals to do the agility tricks required.

Besides knowing the basic sit, down, stay and heel commands, your dog will need to know when to turn right or left, go fast or slow by watching your hand signals. Therefore, pay attention to getting a good foundation with general obedience training first, before trying the agility training.

Wait until your dog has grown to full size prior to starting the agility training. A puppy won’t be ready for the obstacle courses until he has become full grown. Most dogs are ready at about 1 year of age, although some larger breeds are still growing a bit. Agility training exercises for older dogs, after about age 8, are not recommended-it is just too rigorous for them anymore.

Check out a Dog Agility Club in your area if you are interested in watching these dogs perform. It is really fun to see these dogs performing the obstacle course exercises. You have probably already seen an agility competition on TV, and have an idea of just how well trained these agility dogs are. The tricks these dogs learn through their agility training is really something to see. There are a variety of obstacles that the dogs must either go over, go through (tunnels) or go under, that require not only a physically gifted dog, but some terrific attention to training too.

If you watch an agility competition, it is clear that the dogs and their handlers are having a great time. Any dog enthusiast will really enjoy seeing the kinds of results that agility training for dogs produces. It is no wonder so many people are becoming interested in dog agility clubs.

Through the agility training exercises, your dog will learn how to do things like crawl through a tunnel, walk over a teeter-tooter, jump over hurdles, climb up and down a tall A-frame structure, and weave his way through a series of “weave poles”. All these obstacles together serve to test your dog’s conditioning and agility. Another good side benefit of the training will also be exercising you right along with your dog.

If the idea of agility training for your dog seems to fit his size and personality, you can check out an agility club and get started. Don’t be intimidated by how difficult the exercises look. You can progressively teach your dog his agility training step by step so the training is doable.

Entering your dog into a dog agility school can improve not only your dog’s agility but his overall physical and mental well-being. However, it’s important that you are present on your dog’s training and you know about the equipment that the trainers use to enhance your dog’s agility.

Dog trainers and handlers use equipment like jumps, tunnels, obstacles, and other dog agility equipment as well as teamwork, patience, and careful preparation.

Jumps are made of a horizontal bar supported by two upright bars. These are similar in form with the jumps use in equestrian training, only the upright bars are lower to suit the dog’s size. Much like in horse jumps, dog jumps include bush jumps, wishing wells, window jumps, and water jumps, which are usually positioned to be jumped on the end of the track or course. Jumps can be lowered and moved, depending on the dog’s measurement and consisted of double bar, triple bar, panel, broad, wing, and tire or hoop jumps.

Obstacles are set on an obstacle course and are commonly made of wood. It consists of an A-frame, a seesaw, and a dog-walk. Whenever the dog walks or runs on an obstacle, he must at least make one paw contact the yellow contact zone when ascending and descending.

Tunnels are available in two types: the pipe or the rigid tunnel, and the chute or the collapsed tunnel. These obstacles can be made of rigid vinyl, wire, and a barrel measuring 10 to20 feet in length. Tunnels are considered as the favorite obstacles among dogs.

A pause table is pretty straightforward: it’s a table where the dog pauses for a few seconds and then jumps down again to continue the course. It serves as a break between obstacles.

In 2004, a new obstacle called the Tunnel Maze is introduced. It’s made up of interconnected tunnels where the dogs are guided only by the handler’s voice and commands. However, only the CPE uses this dog agility equipment. You don’t have to put your dog in a specialty training program to teach him some agility skills. This is something that the two of your can easily do together at home. You can grow closer together and maybe both learn a few new tricks!
