You may think that dog obedience training would be very difficult especially if you have never trained a dog before. Of course you want your dog to behave, but how do you get it to do so? What if you make a mistake? Dog obedience training doesn’t have to be as hard as everyone imagines it to be, you just have to know the right things to say and do. As a dog owner dedicated to the goal of training your dog to behave, it is important to be patient, structured, and loving when training your dog. It is important to note that your dog isn’t the only one who has room to learn new tricks. When you start dog obedience training, you are training yourself as well. You will learn a lot besides just the best method to train your dog by, such as the personality and attitudes of your dog. The more you get to know your dog and the way he or she behaves, the easier it will be for you to figure out the best training methods. When you are training your dog to be obedient, it is very important to be firm and consistent in your training techniques. You need to be patient with your dog because it will take a little time for your dog to learn to be obedient. If you stay consistent the way you are training them and be sure not to give up, your dog will learn what you are teaching them, it can just take time. It is important not to give up on them if they haven’t made any progress after just one day. If you keep your eye on the prize and work with them, all of your hard work will pay off. In order to make the job of training your dog easier, you should begin training your dog to do obedient as soon as you get your dog. Although pupply behaviors can be very cute, you are sending your dog the wrong signals if you allow your dog to misbehave in the beginning when it is just a puppy. You must establish dominance over the puppy and set firm rules the very moment he comes home. The most important and tricky step in training is the beginning of potty training. Although jumping, biting, chewing on objects, and running away from you are cute in the puppy stage, it is important to teach your dog from the beginning that these behaviors are not acceptable. Because dogs are creatures that work in packs, you need to let your dog know that you are the leader of this pack. You can become the Alpha by making sure that your dog knows who is in charge of this family as soon as he or she comes home. You do not have to start being a task master as soon as your new puppy comes home, have some fun with them, but remember to reign in bad behavior from the very start. Even while you are training them, don’t forget to play with your new puppy and have a lot of fun with them. In order to be prepared for you new puppy’s arrival into your home, it would be a great idea to do a little research on dog obedience training before you bring your new puppy home. Even if you have already picked up your furry little friend in a hasty decision and are now browsing for ways to train him, you can still find hope. But you must understand that you make yourself known to him as the alpha of your little back as soon as possible. You must also remain constant in the training you put him or her through.

* “Heel” to walk on a loose leash

* Respond to “No!”

* “Sit”

* “Stay”

* “Down”

* Respond to “Release”

One reason for doing obedience training is to establish a foundation from which you and your dog can learn to effectively relate to one another. The first thing obedience training does is to create a common language for you and your dog. This, in turn, lets your dog know the proper response (behavior) that you expect in place of socially maladaptive behavior.

The obedience trained dog can respond properly to your commands, instead of neurotically trying to please and becoming ever more anxious with your displeasure. This dog acknowledges the people in the family as the leaders and becomes more secure and calm in this bond of love and authority.

Obedience training can be used to help fulfill some of your dog’s basic needs, such as exercise, the security of knowing what’s expected, a feeling of accomplishment, and constructive social interaction. Obedience training will give your pet a job to do and can be useful in redirecting some of the mental energy of an animal that was meant for work.

Dog Obedience Training Styles

There are many styles of dog obedience training. Here I’m going to mention what I consider the two main types. In future articles I will explore some of the less well known styles of training, some of which are becoming quite popular. This page and the next two pages should help you decide on the best style of training for your individual pet.

Two Most Popular Obedience Training StylesThe main types of training are leash/collar training and reward training. I consider the leash and collar training to be a hard training style, and reward training to be a soft training style. Both styles are very old; however, the leash and collar has been used more and is considered the traditional style. I think this is because most obedience training has traditionally developed from military dog training. There are several reasons why this method would be preferred to using food, such as the nature of the dogs being trained, the task or mission of the animal, and the temperament and background of the military handler/trainer.

Article by Dr. Mayra Alfonso

Initially, what is necessary if you decided to train your dog? The first plan is usually the most essential thing to perform and also ignored. If you are preparing to enhance your pet’s behavior, it is truly essential to check your entire relationship with your pet. It is recommended to teach your pet with dog obedience training once you have a good bond with your pet. Though, the relationship with your dog will be stronger once you undergo your pet to a dog obedience training. Definitely, the basic relationship with your pet is vital in order for your dog to have trust on you.

If you don’t have a strong attachment with your dog, the dog obedience training will not run smoothly and will make you feel frustrated as you go along each tasks. If you are focusing on particular behaviors, and your dog is not cooperating well, you may break this procedure into an easy step by step procedure in order for the handler to manage the dog obedience training uncomplicatedly. If you want to implement to your dog to not bark simultaneously, you must be able to teach the canine by command. After this command is well established on the dog, you will be able to silent him on command as well as to teach him to bark on command. Dog obedience training is not all about training the dog with the ultimate objectives at first. You can surely begin the dog obedience training with simple commands.

One of the behaviors that the handler wants to implement to their dog is for the pet to learn not to chew on household things. One remedy to this dilemma may include having a lot of dog toys for the dog to focus his attention with. You can have 4-5 toys that the dog can play upon each time, if you will give him a tremendous number of toys he will eventually lose interest in it and will return to chew on your household items. To implement dog obedience training upon your dog you can teach him to pick his toys on command. A simple toy that is scattered on the floor can be a tool for the dog training to be accomplished and for the pet to have a work to perform.

If you own a new dog, you must be able to point out the problems with your pet. Once you determine the dog behavior problems of your pet, you can now begin to apply the dog obedience training to them. If your dog loves to chew on your household items, this is not his fault. But it is a natural tendency of the dog to chew on furniture. These are common negative behavior of dogs that you must focus on, and to be able to learn the training procedures that is essential for the dog to know that his behavior is not appropriate. If you did not exert any effort to train your puppy, eventually it grows older, the behavior problem that it possesses will worsen, and this would make it more difficult to train the dog.

Article by Wendy Gorman

Dogs are said to be “man’s best friend”. We love dogs because they are lively, full of character and can be trained and taught to respond to commands which control their behavior. How is this obedient behavior achieved? Obedience training can be tricky and therefore requires the dog owner to have some understood of the basic methods utilized in dog training. Dog obedience training not only gives pleasure and is fun, but more importantly, it enhances your dog’s skills. It is also one the best bonding activities experienced between you and your pet.

Do not be over ambitious and aggressive in your training. Obedience training requires some time to successfully complete. Be aware that such training is ideally designed to assess and improve upon the inherent habits and traits of your pet. Do not expect obedience training to solve your dog’s behavioral problems in an instant. The program should assist your dog and properly influence him to build on his positive and good habits. A collateral advantage of instituting a training program for your dog is that it serves as a means for resolving any other problems that may arise from time to time.

Obedience training can also be a bridge for communication between the owner and the dog. Good Communication is highly important to the success of your training. Learn and practice how to effectively communicate with your dog. Instruct your dog with commands. However, you must deliver that command in a way that it will sound persuading to your dog. You can instruct and teach your dog various commands like sit, stay or fetch, but each time you must use the correct instructing tone of voice.

In conducting the training, you will need to possess, or teach yourself, the virtue of patience. Do not get upset if your dog hardly understands your instruction. Remember that they think differently to humans. Dogs, if left alone, are animals delivered and raised with no proper training. It is not surprising therefore that dogs can act like any other animals. It may irritate you to see your dog destroying your things, soiling your room, or biting you – but that is how dogs act. If you really love your dog, then you should learn to accept their nature. Only then can you start to alleviate some of the less welcome examples of their behavior.

A Social hierarchy is easily established with your dog through proper obedience training. Somehow, it provides the feeling of fulfillment once your dog obeys your voice commands.

It is not necessary to impose complicated maneuvers in early training. First teach your dog to obey you. You can teach him how to kiss or shake hands for example. These tricks are commonly undertaken by dogs and they enjoy the experience.

Your training needs to be a rewarding and fun experience for both you and your dog. This kind of training will help you interact with your dog and lead to a more harmonious relationship. You should observe the difference between trained and untrained dogs as you go about your normal business. Trained dogs are confident and they can be given more freedom. Untrained dogs have to be restricted and enjoy very little freedom.

You can train your dog at any age, it is never too late. Remember, the most fitting and proper time for training your dog is now. You can always start your training now.

Yes you can do basic dog obedience training. Using simple commands will make life easier with your pet. Every dog owner should learn basic dog obedience training, either by DIY books and videos or through professionally organized classes. When Hershey (my 140lb English Mastiff puppy) and I take our daily walks, it is not uncommon for us to see other dog walkers being pulled around by powerful, and undisciplined dogs. Dogs like people are not born with good manners, they need to be taught how to act. Therefore basic dog obedience training is extremely necessary.

Books on dog behavior can help you learn how to stop dog behavior problems (for example, dog aggression). Training your dog in the comfort of your own home can be a very appealing option, especially if you’d prefer not to spend lots of money on training classes for dogs, in which case a book on dog behavior would be a wise investment, but only if you put what it teaches you in to practice on a daily and consistent basis.

Proper dog obedience training is a continuous, life-long process – a work in constant progress. Proper dog training and dog care should always include dog obedience. You don’t have to be the Dog Whisperer to be successful with training your dog, but, you do need to be consistent with your efforts.

Dog training should always be fun and you should always follow some sort of professional course outline when training your dog at home. Remain positive, both in your attitude and in your technique. Positive reinforcement ( treats, praise, and toys) should always be used to reward your dog for all commands he/she accomplishes correctly.

Basic commands considered by many professionals to be critical are teaching your dog to walk by your side, sit, stay, down, up and come when called. Understanding the importance of positive reinforcement will make teaching dog obedience to your dog a lot simpler. It should be the foundation of any quality dog training program.

Some quick tips to begin:1.Spend 30 minutes a day, broken up into 5-10 minute segments, training your dog.2.Use a 6 foot leash.3. If you are using treats, a treat pouch will be very convenient.4. Never train your dog when you are in a hurry or a bad mood.5. Be enthusiastic during your sessions.6. Make it fun for both you and your dog.

If you are consistent, patient, persistent and enthusiastic with your training, then your dog will look forward to becoming the loyal, obedient friend you’ve always dreamed of. In my opinion, you haven’t lived until you have truly experienced the unconditional bond between man and his best friend. Having the confidence and the ability to be able to take your dog with you anywhere is a great feeling, and a lot of fun too.

Dog Obedience Training – Yes You Can.

Is Your Dog’s Behavior out of Control and Undisciplined? Are You Unsure How to Apply Dog Obedience Training and Stop Them from Destroying Your House? Let Me Tell You What I Did to Solve This Problem.

Why consider dog obedience training

Hello fellow dog owners, my name is Troy, I live in Las Vegas. Above is a picture of me and the family dog Layla. We have had Layla for a few years now and she is really a great dog. However that was not always the case. You see back in 2008 I had promised my daughter that if she made improvement in school and raised her grades that we would get a dog. My daughter never had a dog before and I had not had a dog since I was child. Well, you guessed it she improved her grades and we set out to find a family dog.

Now, I am a single father with two young children at home so money is an issue with everything we set out to do. We had decided that since there was such overpopulation at the local animal shelter that we would adopt a dog rather than buy one from a pet store. We were proud that we able to rescue a dog that may have been put down and we saved money as well. We also got lucky as found what we believe to be an English Pointer. We did not realize that when we were looking at all the dogs at the animal shelter, we just knew she was adorable and my daughter instantly fell in love with her. The lady at the animal shelter suggested considering dog obedience training classes, she said it would cost about . I figured we would be fine without dog obedience training classes as I had several dogs when I was growing up. We paid the fees and took out new dog Layla home.

How I learned about dog obedience training

Well we quickly realized why it was suggested to have Layla take dog obedience training classes. In the first week she had chewed up 2 pairs of my shoes, destroyed several of daughter’s stuffed animals and ate the cables to my son’s video game controllers. She also had a very sensitive stomach and many of the dog foods we tried feeding here gave her diarrhea. I was regretting ever agreeing to get a dog, my life just got even more stressful. I figured we needed to follow through with the dog obedience training classes but coming up with an extra and driving to the other side of town every week was a bit overwhelming. Now as I mentioned I am a single father with 2 young children, a full time job and volunteer as my kids youth soccer coach. The thought of dishing out more money and driving clear across town with 2 kids, an undisciplined dog all between school, soccer practice and my daughter’s girl scouts meetings was more than I felt I could handle. So, what did I do? I went online and found what I believe to be most complete dog obedience training and dog care method available. Now many dog training products exist but I would like to recommend to you the one that really worked for me. The best part was I did not have to waste my limited time to drive across town in traffic while spending more money than I can afford. I tell you all this because this product simplified my life and I only spent a totally and completed the process in my own home. If you can relate to my story then you really need to click on the link below.

Having a pet dog around the house is a pleasure and most of us like to share quality time with our pet dogs. It is relaxing to have a pet at home because we always can look forward to their unstinting love and affection at all times. Owning a pet is also a responsibility as we have to ensure that our pet is safe at all times in an urban setting that is not a natural habitat for them. This is why it is very important that you, as a pet owner, begin dog obedience training classes for your pet dog at the earliest.

The basics of dog training always begins with getting your pet dog to listen to you and obey basic commands such as ‘come’ ‘stop’ etc. Teaching a dog to obey your commands is very different from teaching kids as the communication interface that we have with our pets is quite complex. For example, the pet dogs get their cues from the tone of your voice and this is why it is necessary to speak in clear firm tones while addressing your pet dog.

In case you are having difficulties in the dog obedience training sessions with your pet dog, you can get onto the Internet and find interesting dog training websites. I have found that the best websites with information on how to train your dog are presented in a blog format. These websites have themes that are discussed with an option for you to initiate comments and opinions. While you are at the website, you could also sign up for free newsletters so that you could always stay updated on the new topics on puppy obedience training as soon as they are published.

You could also download the dog training free report that is made available at some of the best dog obedience training websites. On reading the report you will learn how to identify important issues with your pet dog so that you can target your training sessions to rectify these issues and ensure pet obedience at all times.

These reports list out many fun ways to begin your basic dog obedience training sessions so that both you and your pet can enjoy them to the fullest. As the dog training free report is written by an expert you can expect to find nifty tips on how to stop dog barking, stop dog jumping, stop dog chewing etc. This will prove useful as you will have a well trained pet dog that is an absolute delight to have around the house.

Once your pet dog has gone through the dog obedience training routine you can be confident of having a fully trained pet that is capable of understanding all your commands the first time around. A pet dog that does not display aggressive tendencies and that does not chew things up around the house is a delight to be with and can provide you with many years of camaraderie and companionship that you will cherish for a long time in your life.

As we said earlier, dog obedience training is only part of the equation. Read on and follow some helpfull tips.

Always pick a dog that matches your lifestyle Many people choose dogs that are “cute” or “funny”. Or purchase them on a whim. But that is not a good way to choose a pet. A dog, depending on the breed, can be a 15 year relationship. You want to be sure that the temperament of your dog matches your lifestyle. So do your research and be honest about what kind of activity level you have in your life. Don’t get a dog that needs a lot of activity because you need a reason to take a walk and lose some weight. You and the dog will end up frustrated.

Always try to devote 10-15 minutes every day to training. This is all it takes to train a dog. Any longer and your dog will become tired and resentful. Any less and they will not retain the information as well. You need to have a light balance when it comes to dog obedience training.

There can only be one trainer. Dogs are pack animals and take direction only from the pack leader. A pack animals only have one leader. Determine who will be responsible for the dogs training and do not let anyone else teach the dog anything new until they have mastered the basics.

Name your dog with a practical name. The experts say that a dog’s name should end in a vowel because it is easier for them to understand. Don’t make it too fancy or long or the dog might not know you are talking to it. Short and sweet is always the way. Use the dog’s name often when you are patting it and when you are feeding it. Do not use it as part of teaching them a new command or they may associate their name with that command instead. Only use their name when attention is required. Train them to look at your face by saying their name and gently turning their face up toward yours. Ey contact is important. When you are training it is important that they have all their attention on you. Calling their name should mean “look at the pack leader”.

Once you have established your expectations with the dog, they need to be reinforced by everyone consistently but again, no one except the “pack leader” should ever train the dog.

Your first training should be learning to sleep in a crate You may think it’s cruel but in fact, dogs are den animals. They actually enjoy sleeping in a crate. When they are puppies, keep the crate very small so they cannot relieve themselves in it (animals generally will not relieve themselves where they sleep or eat). As they become housebroken, get them a crate that is comfortable and place it somewhere near where the family is. Keep the crate wherever the designated “pack leader” sleeps. Forcing a dog to sleep away from his “pack” confuses him and makes him think he has done something wrong. Do not let the dog sleep in the bed with you until you have fully trained them to sleep in a crate. Breaking a dog of sleeping on the bed, once they are in that habit is almost impossible. Train your dog to use the crate by putting them in there for a few minutes at a time several times during the day, gradually increasing the time they spend in there until they are assured that you are eventually going to come and let them out.

Second lesson should be how to walk on a lead/leash This is important,especially if you do not have an enclosed yard. Your dog should understand that when they go outside, they are expected to behave while on the leash. There are many books and videos on training dogs to help you learn how to do this.

The third training lesson should be “whoa” or “stop” or whatever you want to use as a command for your dog to stop moving. This command is VERY important as it could save your dog’s life. Do not rely on calling their name as a command to get them to stop. There may be times when you do not want them to come to you but instead stay right where they are. If you call their name, they may think you want them to come. Some sort of stopping command should be taught even before “come”. There are many videos and books that can help you with this training.

Keep in mind that all dogs have different temperaments Just like kids, different breeds learn differently and at different rates. Some dogs are stubborn and will challenge you at every turn. Others will just about bend over backwards to please you. You may need to adjust your training techniques to meet the need of your dogs temperament. This is another good reason why you should research a breed before you purchase or adopt a dog to be sure you can handle them.

Always reward success and good behavior with praise I don’t recommend using “treats” as a reward for training as it teaches them to work for the treat, not for your praise. If no treat is offered when they perform, they will become confused but praise can always be given.

Determine a “release” command for ending training When you are done training (and ended on a positive note) give your dog a command that signals you are finished. But make sure it’s not a common word. We made the mistake of using “okay” as a release command with our first dog and every time someone said it, she thought it was time to have fun and got all wound up!. Use a command like “Playtime” or “Recess” to let your dog know that the training part of the day is over and now they can just enjoy your company.

Always end your daily training sessions on a positive note If you have been trying to teach them something new and they are just not getting it, review something that they already do well and then praise them for that and end the session. Your dog will look forward to the training sessions if you always end positively, regardless of the success of that lesson. Once the training is over, then it would be okay to give them “treats” or “cookies” as long as it’s not as a reward for an accomplishment. If the dog barks at you, then turn around, ignore it for 30 secs and when it stops, reward it. If a dog jumps on you and does not stop after you say stop, turn and say no in a firm tone. Remember! Do not yell at a dog, it will not understand you and will continue to do the action, leading you to frustration.
