I have a dog that I adopted from a friend. She is four years old and I do not think she had proper training. She barks when she gets excited, like when I tell her it is time for a walk. She barks and barks and barks and jumps around and it is hard for me to put the leash on her. Do you have any good suggestions to help train her to stop barking when it is time for a W-A-L-K?
I read on my local SPCA website that I could shake a can of pennies or squirt her with a water gun to get her to momentarily stop her from barking then say “good dog” give her a treat. I mean, would that really work?

Every dog owner loves their dog but training them can be a real nightmare for many people. There are many reasons for this including the dog testing the will of the owner and also the owner simply not being strict enough. If you have tried the traditional rewarding good behaviour method only to find you are making little or no progress, then looking at alternatives such as the electric shock collar might be worth it. These collars have been around for a few decades already but for smaller dogs these collars were simply too strong because there wasn’t an adjustment for shock levels. Professionals in the dog training industry used these collars to train hunting dogs however now there are electric shock collars that are much better designed for the domestic dog. When buying an electric dog training collar you will notice that there are two main types, there’s a bark collar and then there’s a beeper collar.
As you may have guessed, the bark collar is specifically designed to train your dog to stop barking. It does this by emitting an electric shock whenever your dog barks. Hopefully before long, your dog will learn to stop this bad behaviour. The great thing about this sort of collar is that training your dog can happen day or night and if you’re out at work then the collar will continue working when your dog is at home. Many dog owners find out that their dog has been barking during the day when no one is home and this can make your neighbors really angry. If you want to keep your neighbors happy then buying this sort of collar is very much advisable. The collar trains your dog when you can’t.

Ultrasonic collars can be used to stop barking dogs. There is some debate about whether ultrasonic collars are humane. The trouble is we humans can’t hear ultrasonic sound so it’s hard to make a call on whether this is too loud or even painful for a dog. However, they all work on the idea that a loud noise that will startle a dog and cut off the barking.
Humans can’t hear this but dogs can as it’s an annoying, high-pitched sound that is triggered whenever the dog barks.
For collars the sound is set off by the dog wearing the collar; however there have been cases of these being set off by other dogs’ barking, or even other loud noises.

Barking in dogs is a very natural thing. It’s their natural way of communicating within their species and to the rest of the world. Most of the time dogs bark for reasons such as when they see a stranger approaching their territory or due to a sudden noise they cannot comprehend like a cracker or a thud. Such type of barking is good and welcomed by most dog owners.
Dogs also bark when they want attention from their owner. This type of bark tends to be very loud and continuous and the dog tends to relent from it only when it has got the attention from the person he wanted. But from the owner’s point of view, these kinds of barks should not be given attention as the dog may make it a habit to bark like that every time he feels neglected. Young dogs or puppies use this type of bark the most.

Use this simple two step process to stop your dog from barking.
Step 1 Train your dog to Bark.
Although this sounds counter intuitive, read on and all will be revealed.
This will be a repetition and reward sequence. Choose the word you want to have your dog react to when you want him to bark e.g. “Talk”.
The first step is for your dog to link your command with his barking. Hold up a treat and say, “Talk”
Eventually your will bark if only to ‘encourage’ you to drop the treat.
