Dog Obedience Training – Over-Excitement in Dogs and Puppies
It’s always nice when your dog or puppy shows you that he’s really happy to see you when you get home, however this over excitement can end up being a nuisance as your puppy gets older and bigger. Lets be realistic do you really want muddy foot prints all over your brand new dress or trousers? No thought not!
What causes over excitement in dogs and puppies?
Attention seeking – Your dog or puppy will learn that by getting over excited may lead to you giving him a response. By petting your dog when he jumps up or rolls around on the floor you are simply reinforcing this negative behavior – and guess what? He will continue doing it.
Face to face greeting – Dogs and puppies greet each other at face level – however, as they are unable to get close to your face they will jump up and get over excited in the process. To avoid this negative behavior try greeting your dog at eye level. Crouch down to his level and ask your visitors to do the same.
Basic dog obedience training techniques – A good way to stop your dog getting over excited is by training him with some basic obedience training techniques such as sit, come and fetch. By doing this you will have more control over the situation when he starts getting over excited.
Exercise – You may notice that your dog or puppy gets over excited due to not being tired. By giving your pooch plenty of exercise your dog or puppy won’t have the energy to jump up, roll on the floor or even show submissive urination.
