Yes you need to be consistent . good treat soft chewyand beefy or pieces of chicken. be patient and make sure oyu have no distractions..good luck-
I’ve used clicker training, and also used it in classes I’ve run.
It works very well when used properly, but can be difficult for some people to get their heads around, and like anything, if not done properly is not effective.
To start, you just need a clicker, treats, and hungry dog.
There are lots of books and websites to help – just Google ‘clicker training dog’.
What novices usually get wrong is thinking the click is a reward instead of a ‘marker’, and/or clicking at the wrong time.
Some behaviours are better suited to clicker training than others.
I use a clicker when I’m teaching a new command to my dog. It really is affective and gets us to where he understands what I want faster than any other method.
However – clicker training isn’t always affective for dogs with behavioral issues. It would be nice if it was, but … you can train some dogs start to finish with a clicker and some, you can’t.
Really, all you need to get started is a clicker, some treats and good timing. If you’re dog is already well behaved and you just want to learn to teach it some tricks with a clicker – A petsmart clicker class is fine. But I wouldn’t recommend them for obedience or any other kind of training.
