My dog is 7 years old and nomatter how sad it is, she’s still not leash trained!!!!!! Instead of me walking her, it’s the other way around. How can I get her to stop? I’ve tried so any time but they always end the same way.
she’s perfectly fine on the leash in my yard but when we leave the yard…

Ok so by not being leashed trained you mean she has no leash manners. Ok heel is one of the hardest to train, seriously I’ve been working at it for years and I admit I’ve gotten frustrated and so I stopped, now I need to take the Canine Good Citizen test so I have been back working at it. My dear friend is a dog trainer, he owns Dogmatic Training (hence my name) he trains two ways depending on the dog, he uses an e-collar and shocks the dog if they pull and or he uses a prong collar. with my dog he has me on a prong collar, what this does is lessens the amount of pulling, next when the dog pulls I stop, pull the dog back into postion next to my leg and I start walking again saying HEEL. I praise as she remains by my side but the minute she gets “out of the box” (goes too far ahead) I stop and reposition her and try again. Now when I stop, she automatically readjusts herself back into position and I say heel and we try again.
Trust me when I say it’s a long hard process and it’s very time consuming, I think that heel is probably one of the hardest tricks to teach because dogs just want to be in front. I would start with a prong so you have more control and every single day work on heel, when she pulls you stop (be like a tree) and move her back into position and say Heel and try again. She’ll soon learn that pulling makes you stop and she goes no where.
Good luck
I highly recommend Brad Pattison’s new book, Unleashed. I was having similar problems with my dog, and within the first 48 hours of training, we started noticing positive changes! It’s called umbilical training. Do it for 2 weeks, 2 hours a day(doesn’t have to be 2 consecutive hours, you can do half hour here, half hour there, as long as it adds up to two hours). You tie the leash around your belt, or waist, and go about your daily chores – doing laundry, dishes, going to convenience store- with the dog by your side on leash. Pretend like the dog isn’t there at all, and she will follow you around the house. Any time she tries to pull you, or she behaves inappropriately, you can calmly give her a very quick leash correction. DON’T yank the leash hard enough to hurt her, you just want her to redirect her attention so she looks up at you. Umbilical training teaches your dog that your movements have power, and that you are the alpha and should be respected. Try not to use verbal commands during these two weeks of training. Our voices are jam packed with emotion, and dogs are super sensitive to our tones. We get too stressed out, frustrated, angry, and to our dogs, we end up sounding like a weak or injured animal, so our poor furry friend feels the need to step up to the alpha plate to take control of the pack.
The book is an easy, entertaining read, and I was so amazed at the results! There is no quick-fix for problem behaviour, but with patience, and consistancy, both you and your dog can live in harmony.
Best of luck!
If you want to train your dog it will take some time because you first should get a shock collar it just makes him remember your the boss and you should start by walking dog with the shock collar on just around the block. But remember to take the shock collar off after your walk. It should take about a week before you are able to walk your dog around two or three blocks still with the shock collar on so you can test him out. After two or three days go on a longer walk without the shock collar on so you can see if he can go without but if he starts pulling you yell sit and pull out his favorite treat so he will stop for you.( but remember to bring the collar with you but don’t use it until she starts pulling you or if she dose.) Then if your walk is good then you can train her without a leash on her but unless you can out run her don’t try it. but always remember to not give up the dog will be trained just give it some time. Oh yha after every walk give her her favorite treat. And just because I recommend the shock collar I love dogs It’s what I had to use to leash train my huskie and trust me the first week was the hardest thing to do but I love my dogs it just takes time.
