We have a clicker.. and his little ears perk up at the sound of it.. but I must not be using it the correct way. He just goes back to whatever he was doing.

Pretty darn well. you don’t have to click when the dog is trained.
It is a great way to have fun while training your pet. I’ll send you a site in just a minute. It will help.
These are free lessons, just click the sidebar.

If you statt at puppyhood, almost any form of training will work. Clicker should be fine, as long as you don’t overuse it. If you do, the dog will just think of it as “white noise”, and ignore it.
God bless
Clicker training works, but many people don’t know quite how to do it correctly.
You don’t click to get the dog to do something, you click in order to reward him for doing something. Think about it this way — if you’ve ever been to SeaWorld, or watched trainers work with Dolphins/Orcas — do they blow the whistle to make the Dolphin do a trick? No, they blow the whistle and then reward with a fish *after* the Dolphin does a trick.
Dog training with the clicker was based on Dolphin training.
You should look for a couple of books on clicker training, if you really want to learn how. Also, PetsMart and other dog training centers offer clicker classes, which will teach you how to clicker train.
It works wonders when it’s done right!
I’ve included some clicker sites, below. Any book by Karen Pryor is a good one, since she developed the training methods.
Good luck!
The clicker is used to reinforce good behaviour and the “click” should get the dogs attention. The dog should then be rewarded with a treat, praise/affection. They then associate the “click” with a nice experience.
So the second they behave as you want them to you “click” to get their attention and then reward them.
Most dogs will pick it up quickly but the reward is vital, otherwise it’s just a noise !!
The clicker is obviously getting his attention so you just need to reinforce it with the treats immediately after the click.
Keep going !!
