Is Clicker Training The Most Effective Training Methods Around?
Teach your dog to come on your command at training dog to come
Clicker training makes use of a small device; a plastic box containing a small metal strip that makes a distinctive “click” sound when pressed. This device is known as a “clicker”, hence the name – clicker training. Clicker training is known as one of the most effective and humane training methods around, but how does it work?
Clicker training relies on consistency and co-operation; and allows to us clearly and effectively communicate with our dogs. This allows us to both shape and reinforce new behaviour in our dogs as well as to correct any current or existing behaviour problems. Clicker training, like with any positive reinforcement technique relies on the fact that dogs learn by the immediate consequences of their actions.
Clicker training can potentially produce results fast by use of consistency and by focusing on what is right, rather than what is wrong. It builds a strong bond between you and your dog and is both simple and fun to implement. It’s best to start this sort of training when your dog is still a puppy. You can still use clicker training with older dogs, but you’ll need a little more patience as it may take longer.
So how is clicker training used anyway? When a dog has performed a desired action, the new behaviour is marked with a “click” of the clicker. This is positive reinforcement, and over time; your dog will come to associate the “click” sound with having done something correct. Think of the clicker as a replacement for verbal praise. What do I mean by this?
Well, when a dog has done the right thing, we praise them and say “good dog”, or something similar. This can be said in a number of different ways and in varying tones. Your dog doesn’t understand your actual words, so it picks up on the next best thing; your tone of voice. If you aren’t consistent, your dog will get confused. The advantage of a clicker here is that they always sound the same.
