Um, so, what’s your issue? Pulling, biting/snapping at the lead, lunging at oncoming traffic, fear/avoidance…maybe you just don’t know how to start?
There could be many issues here.
I suggest a class. They offer hands on learning with a real person who can help you with your individual needs.
Are you having trouble with something specific? If he is a puppy and just learning, it gets better the more you do it. He will get the hang of it as time goes on.
What the problem is?
Then maybe I can give you my input.
You’ll want to invest in a choke chain for this training.
With the chain on his neck properly (there is a right and wrong way, ask a pet specialist at the specialty store you go to), have your dog sit on your left side. In your left hand, hold the leash loose enough to allow your dog to walk inches to the left of your leg, but only get his head past your thigh. In your right hand, hold the rest of the leash and a yummy treat. While making sure he sees the treat, hold your right hand at your left hip, just in front of his nose so that he can see it without lunging for it or going cross-eyed. After that, take a step forward and say “heel” as you move your right leg. Go about 5-10 feet, still holding the treat out, so that he follows you. If he pulls even once to get the treat, stop walking and move your hand back to your right hip and wait 5 seconds. Then, repeat the process. After he successfully follows you the short distance 3 times without pulling, lengthen the distance and repeat.
get a choke collar an when you put the leash an collar on him make sure hes sitting down an calm an when your walking make sure he walks beside you an if he starts to pull tug on the leash an make the “sist” noise an they’ll realize that thats a warning that their doing something wrong an after a while they learn not to do it. weve done it with two chows an it works great, best dogs ive ever walked.
Lol really what is the issue? You just have to keep practicing being on a leash everyday. Yall should take long walks together and make sure he understands that your the pack leader.
Snap on the leash. Start walking. When he starts to pull, stop. Wait until he looks back at you with that “Arent’ you coming?” expression. Then start walking again. When he starts to pull, stop again. the first walk using this method is torturous, but they usually get the idea fairly quickly if you are consistent and don’t let the dog drag you.
If this is a baby dog and is fighting the leash/collar or refusing to walk, carry a hot dog. He’ll follow you anywhere, leash or no leash.
Hmmm…there are a lot of things to consider for your dog leash training. Do you know where to start? Or maybe that is your problem. As a newbie, you have to start reading and learning about dog leash training for German shepherds first.

i would go with a pinch chain over a choke chain. my husband had great success using one training a german shepherd.
