New dog and potty training?
my family already has a dog, but i would like to get one for myself. I just remeber how tedious it was to potty train our old dog. So, if you have any suggestions on potty training i would appreciate them.
p.s.- my other dog does not appreciate it when other animals get attention, I would also like suggestions on how to deal with that problem too.
Thanks

1. You should not potty train your dog. You should take your dog on walks daily, when your dog needs to go.
2. If your dog is a puppy, of coarse your dog will want attention! You can have another person give attention to your dog while you’re giving attention to another animal. You can also call an animal trainer.
Well to potty train you’re pooch you should try putting news paper on the ground just in case. But i did hear you should try to catch them in the act so you can yell at them when they are doing it so they know its a bad thing. DO NOT HURT THE DOG THOUGH please =)
and as for the jealousy i dont know how to fix that becase my dog has the same problem.
Crate train the new dog. That is the best way to do the potty training thing.
Also, get a dog that is going to grow to be about the same size as the dog you have. Also, opposite sex is better, but be diligent to spay or neuter the the older dog.
To be sure that your other dog handles the new one, start now by not giving as much attention.
And when the new dog gets here, be prepared for territorial issues. The Crate will help with this, as it will establish the new dog a territory.
When the new dog gets here, make sure to spend some one on one time with each of them. Take the new dog to puppy/ obedience classes, and take the older dog out for a walk or to the park on it’s own.
Remember, puppies can be a lot on an older dog. Don’t let the puppy bully the older dog. If things get out of controle, you have to get between them and face the new dog. Give a good firm “No! Leave it!”. This lets the new dog know that it is unappropriate to pick at the older dog and lets the older dog know you are there for him.
On crate training… ignore any whining and remember the rule that one hour per a month in age plus one in crate time. For example a two month old puppy needs to go out to potty at least every 3 hours. Even in the middle of the night. If you don’t catch the pup in the act, you can not say anything.
Best of luck to you, and if you get a puppy check out the Ultimate Puppy Toolkit. I am not a sales person, and i did not write it, it is just an excellent tool when you have a new puppy.
Here’s how to potty train a dog:
DONT leave the food out for the dog to graze. Feed at specified times.
Bring the young dog out to the SAME potty spot imediately after feeding. When he does his thing praise, praise praise.
When he is going imediately give the potty command you want to use , I use hurry…. just a friendly hurry… hurry….and lots of praise.
The is say “go home”… and trot back to the door with the dog. This teaches the dog 2 things. Where to potty and if he gets off leash for some reason he will learn to go back to the house.
if the dog has an accident in the home…. wipe it up and wipe it on the ground in the potty spot. give the dog some fresh water and bring him to that spot and give the Hurry command. He will asssociate this spot as the spot he needs to do his business.
The other dog needs to be socialized. He needs to feel at ease around other dogs. You need to be in control and the dog needs to focus on the Alpha (which is you the master).
The most important in training a dog is to manipulate the dog through fum activities that run for about 10 minutes at a time.
The goal is for your dog to sit with his tail wagging waiting for your attention.
You need to be relaxed and in control when you attempt to do any dog training.
You may want to bring them both with you to a petsmart or someplace where you can do some basic training with them together. You may want ott he puppy to be about 5 months old for this. i strat with sit, stay, down, hurry and go home from day 1 with any new dog reguardless of age.
good luck
