What is the point of a clicker in dog training?

Can anybody tell me?

I’m reading a book on clicker training and would like to get started immediately. Problem is I live in Korea. Don’t want to bother with finding, ordering, then waiting two months for delivery for a real clicker from the U.S.

Introduction to Clicker Training

Dog-Clicker Training-

Clicker training with dogs is fairly well known, but all animals can be trained with the “Clicker” method.

Dogs soon learn that when they perform a particular action it gets them a reward immediately after hearing the click, this is a very positive way of training, which dogs react well to. They soon start performing the action in the hope of getting another treat. The training sessions are totally pleasurable for the dog so they learn very quickly, once they have realised that they get a reward.

The difference between clicker training and other reward based training methods is that with the clicker training method the dog immediately understands which action has resulted in his receiving the reward. As he hears the click as the correct action is performed and he immediately receives the reward.

My 6 month old Sheltie just finished basic obedience which she excelled in. The instructor (who has been teaching for 20 or so years) said she’s the most natural she’s ever seen! I had to brag! We are starting agility this week and they use a clicker. I’m afraid the clicker will set her back. I’m planning on doing competitive dog obedience (novice) in December with her. She also has a 12 week old Sheltie brother who is more of an average learner. Should I think about clicker training with him?

The ones I found so far want to sell you books and CDs on the subject with no clue on some basic instructions. I plan to buy a book but want to first just get an idea if it will work with my dog. I have a clicker but just need a few free instructions on how to start. Maybe someone out there could give me some pointers on the basics of clicker training.

she is about 2 years old and she has had no prior training.

I have a 7 month old Belgian Malinois and I want to teach him some simple tricks. I don’t intend to make him a protection dog. I know it’s quite costly. I was able to teach him some obedience training like sit, stay, fetch etc. and I’m using the reward method and I find it ok. I’m just curious. Is clicker training better?

I’ve clicker trained my dogs. Is it basically the same thing? Any differences I should know?
