We’ve started clicker training with the dogs and I’m loving it. Zoey, miss over eager, does extremely well because she will do whatever it takes to hear the click and get treated, so she is real easy to shape. Josie, used to me showing her what to do and then performing it for a treat, gets frustrated easily but more than makes up for it when she does get it (She’s a mirror reflection of myself – I’m so used to understanding everything instantly, and hate when I don’t get things right away. Such as dog training, I can teach kids how to solve algebraic equations all day but I’m still learning how to communicate with my dogs!). The cues Josie knew from our previous training she has down almost perfectly. But I’m worried about them becoming dependent on treats.
If you’ve used the clicker training method, was it hard to transition your dogs out of expecting treats, or after so much repetition did it stick with them? What can I start doing differently to make sure they don’t get treat-dependent?

I bought my 3 year old shelter dog a clicker this morning and she loves it. She gets excited when she see’s it now. I tried to have it around my wrist to be able to click cute things she does, but she just follows me around.
I’ve been training her with positive reinforcement for a year now and she’s gotten pretty good, but what can a clicker do that more traditional training can’t?

For those of you who are familiar w/this, what are the pros, cons and best uses for it? Any breeds that it is NOT effective on?

Ok, I bought a clicker earlier today. And I’ve been training my dog for about 20 minutes, but she is afraid of the clicker. And she has never seen one or heard one. She listens to it then runs away and hides behind the couch. Any possible reasons on why she is scared?
No, we didn’t adopt her, we got her from a person at around 6 weeks.

I’ve never really heard about it until now, of course I haven’t owned a dog in quite awhile either. My dog is about 4 months old and seems to know how to sit, lay down, and he fetches well. We’re having trouble with OFF, as he likes to jump on people a lot and bite. Would a clicker be a good idea? if so, how to use it? other suggestions?

I had a trainer come the other night and she left me a clicker but I cannot for the life of me understand how to use it.
If I use it for them staying do I click while they are happily sitting? How in the world do I use this thing? Please let me know.
Thanks Christine

I’ve recently started clicker training with my dog and am a little confused.
1. Is the click supposed to be the only reward, or do you always follow it with a treat when training? Why do you need the click if you are just going to give it a treat right after? My dog stops paying attention to the training if I don’t give her a treat.
2. How do you add verbal or physical commands to the actions your dog is doing?

I want to start my dogs on clicker training.
I’ve seen it used on ‘its me or the dog(s)’
But I was wonderin if there was any advise or tips you could give me other then the basic idea of click and treat.
