It is always so much of fun to have a pet. A pet may sometimes add so much to you life. A dog is the most common pet. But keeping a dog is fun only if it is trained. An untrained dog turns into a headache for the owner and other visiting his home. Hence it is essential for every owner to train his or her dog in the early stage of life. This would avoid any sort of annoying behavior by the dog and therefore give you peace of mind.

Dog training should ideally start after few months of its birth. Because this is the time when they start showing their aggressive character and this has to be controlled then. Growth of the aggressive behavior may result in their biting people, chewing any household stuff, barking on everyone and even urinating inside the house. If this is not controlled they dog may even start harming you or your friend or neighbor coming in the house. It is essential to teach them that it is not the right behavior and their aggression needs to come down.

For those who have obtained a middle aged dog from a pet shop, they can start this training immediately after obtaining their pet. There is one equipment which can immensely help the owner in the process of training the dog. This equipment is the electronic dog training collars. Through this collar, the owner can tell the dog that its behavior is not accepted.

This collar is a put around the neck of a dog and its main functions include control, identification or style. They also help in controlling manually as the owner can grab their dog through it. Dog training collars are the most necessary product used to educate the dog.

Just like any other product, even this equipment has some advantage and disadvantage. These vary for every different type of collar. But it is necessary for the owner to understand them all before starting to use the product. Then only it can be used as a right tool. There is one more thing which the masters need to remember, these collars are only meant for training, and hence they should be removed after it. The collars come with a training manual, which you should go through. This manual will teach you procedure of training your dog.

These dog training collars are liked by people all around the world and a huge number of dog owners are using it and benefiting from its features. Make sure not to mistake your self by buying an ordinary buckle collar instead of an electronic collar. The basic procedure of this electronic collar in training the dog is that it gives a small shock to the dog when the dog shows some wrong behavior such as barking too much. Since the level of shock is very low it cannot harm the dog in any sense. Hence you do not need to worry about the safety of the dog and also do not bring any thing such as cruelty in your mind. If there is any such doubt in your mind you can test it before using it on your dog.

Article by Allaric Saltzman

Many of us would love to have dogs as pets. Selecting a dog is a tedious and time consuming affair and at times the whole family is involved. After all it would be a part of the family and the time spent in identifying the right dog would be justified. But than is that enough? Not at all since the dog will need some training to gel with the family. The family would want the dog to be obedient and respond to the whims and fancies of the family. This is where the role of a dog collar comes in to play. A dog collar as the name suggests is a collar worn round the dogs neck and could be remotely controlled. Signals would be sent to him and depending on the training imparted to him, he would respond. Fundamentally dog training is all about communication. A dog trainer would simply want the dog to respond to his signals so that his behavior is just right.

It is a fact that dogs are an intelligent breed of animal and can be easily trained. Regardless of the purpose of training, it is widely accepted that a dog collar can give us a better behavior. There are times when a dog would act stubborn and will just not listen to your commands and we all know how frustrating it can be. We all know how embarrassing it is when your dog would just bark at your visitors who happen to be your near and dear ones. There are various types of dog collars that are available in the market and one can make a choice depending on the type of dog he possesses. But than having many choices makes it difficult to select the right collar for your dog. It’s therefore paramount that you opt for the right collar for your dog. For example if the dog is used for hunting expeditions he would need to be trained for a tracking collar device controlled by a remote. Likewise a domesticated dog would need an anti-bark dog device by which his masters could control him. Most of them are effective and serve the purpose. Some vendors would give you the option to return the collar within 30 days and the money would be refunded if at all the collar would not serve the purpose.

However not everybody approves the use of a collar since it could be misused. There are some collars through which shocks of various intensities are released and totally under the control of the trainer. The emotional behavior of a dog is very important consideration during training and if it is not understood by the trainer, the chances of increasing the intensity of the shock stimulant would only create more harm. Some trainers could also use it as a deterrent to punish the dog in some cases and therefore many animal right organizations have pleaded for their ban. They simply suggest that they use more humane ways like rewarding the dog with his favorite food during his training.

Ultrasonic collars can be used to stop barking dogs. There is some debate about whether ultrasonic collars are humane. The trouble is we humans can’t hear ultrasonic sound so it’s hard to make a call on whether this is too loud or even painful for a dog. However, they all work on the idea that a loud noise that will startle a dog and cut off the barking.

Humans can’t hear this but dogs can as it’s an annoying, high-pitched sound that is triggered whenever the dog barks.

For collars the sound is set off by the dog wearing the collar; however there have been cases of these being set off by other dogs’ barking, or even other loud noises.

For dogs that don’t belong to you, there are devices that generate an ultrasonic noise if there is a dog barking in range. A popular one is “Bark Free” although they all work on the same principle most have a range of between 20-70 feet. They are mounted outside as close as possible and ideally in line of sight of the barking dog. When the dog barks, the device emits a tone that acts as a distraction that startles the dog to stop it from barking.

Sonic collars operate on the same principle as ultrasonics, but this sound can be heard by humans. You have to hope the dog stops barking or you’ll have 2 noise sources.

Citronella Dog Collar

The citronella-spray collar works on the principle that a mild unpleasant smell can stop barking. Most of us are familiar with citronella from anti-mosquito candles. Citronella is a natural oil with a lemony smell that is quite pleasant for us but unpleasant for dogs (but not inhumane). I am not sure I would fancy a spray of Citronella up close. Dogs eventually figure it out…although some revert to barking when it is taken off. To be effective any measure has to be consistent and removing the collar is not consistent. These can also be set off by other dogs…a tad unfair and confusing methinks. It seems a reasonable step to try if you are running out of ideas and training hasn’t worked.

Pinch Collars

So you are at the end of your tether. You have what looks to be an un-trainable dog. A more serious measure that has been around for a long time is the pinch-collar. These collars imitate what their mothers used to do to correct them as puppies…a sharp nip on the neck.

Most trainers recommend having the dog wear it all the time so that when the dog barks and she doesn’t stop immediately, give the collar a tug. This effectively stops the dog in mid bark most times. And follow-up with praise and a pet. The pinch collar interrupts the unwanted behavior. Big drawback is that you need the lead to be on and you to be right with the dog.

If you decide to do this, get properly trained in its use and how to put it on your dog. And never never never use it as a punishment. This is a questionable technique for me as it is definitely painful to the dog and if you get angry it may be easy to pinch too long.

Choke Collars

Choke collars work on this same interruption idea but with no link back to being a puppy. They compress the dog’s windpipe and for that reason I personally don’t like them.

Shock Collars

Shock collars arte plain and simple punishment, they give an electric shock whenever the dog barks. Some models you can adjust the voltage. They will stop barking eventually but don’t get to the cause of the barking and the shock is unlikely to be understood by the dog. Some trainers think these cause more aggressive behavior as the dog gets frustrated angry and scared. I would hesitate before using these.

While you are training your dog to learn some general tips and tricks, behaviour, bark training etc, it is very important that you have some kind of a strong hold on it. If this is not done, the dog may even become violent or bite you. It is better to buy the discount dog training collars collars to help you train your dog well without facing any difficulty.

Depending upon the size of your dog, you can buy the collar which is the most suitable for it. The collars with a receiver built inside and are accompanied by a remote. When you press the button, a slight electric shock is passed on to the dog by the receiver in the collar. So whenever your dog does anything that is unruly or violent or behaves against your training, you can just press a button and he would know he did something wrong.

This way with the help of the training collar, you easily make the dog distinguish between favourable and unfavourable behaviour. Also, later on, just a few negative will do the work of the shock and indicate that the action performed was not asked for.

The variable neck sizes of the dogs need us to choose the collar carefully. If the dog is large, then certainly the collars have to be stronger. The dogs over 40 pounds of weight are put these collars. They have various correction levels, a wider range of the remote if the dog goes far, are weather-resistant etc.

There are different collars for dogs that are small. Moreover, the stubborn dogs are dealt with by using a different kind of collar which is especially made for them. The shocks are slightly stronger and more effective for the dogs. For those dogs which are undergoing field training, advanced dog collars should be used. These have an even larger range and also are water resistant. Two and three dog training collars are also available with which a person can attach multiple collars to the same remote and correct only the one which requires correction.

Using dog training collars is fraught with a fair bit of controversy as far as training methods is concerned since the electronic dog collars used to train dogs give the dog shocks to teach it to behave in an appropriate manner. This is something that has raised a storm with many people considering it to be an inhumane as well as cruel method, though there is others equally opposed to these objections citing the fact that these dog training collars are very effective in training their pets.

Modern Collars Can Control As Well As Lessen The Shocks They Give To The Dog

To control the storm of objections raised by many, modern electronic dog training collars have been made that give lesser amounts of shock while also making it possible to lessen the shock by changing the settings which will ensure that the sensation will be discomforting to the dog but will not cause it any pain.

There is little doubt that the dog training collar helps in teaching the pet correct behavior in the shortest possible time and usually you will get a reliable response from your dog after using such collars. There are also different methods of teaching the dog including asking the dog to perform an action while also pressing the button at the same time. On completing the response to the command you can let go of the button and this method is most often used to teach dogs that generally do not obey your commands properly.

Another method of using the dog training collar is to give the dog stronger shocks when it misbehaves. With this method there is really no need to give any commands since the shock should suffice to stop it from misbehaving. Such a method is also useful to teach the dog not to bark excessively.

You will find that the regular dog collars are available in many sizes, colors as well as looks. The dog training collar is really quite a boon for some people, as it will effectively put an end to the misbehavior of the dog. By associating the unpleasant sensations of the shocks it receives, many dogs will learn to behave when a dog training collar is used.

You will be able to source the dog training collar in any local dog supply store and the Internet also has many good resources to tap into. If you do not wish to give the dog shock waves, the electronic dog training collar can be used which lets out an unpleasant sound wave each time the dog misbehaves which is just like the shock collar though there will not be any physical shock. These dog training collars are also available in many sizes.

Lets say right away that we are totally against this form of dog training equipment. The risks of using an

electronic dog training collar far outweighs the benefits and With proper training and patience owners can

usually achieve much better results without using an electronic dog training collar.

An electronic dog training collar is a piece of dog training equipment that sends small electric shocks to

the dog through it’s collar.

It is fastened around the dog’s neck, quite tightly to work properly, in place of the original collar and

the trainer of the dog uses a transmitter to send small electric shocks to the dog via electrodes implanted on the electronic dog training collar.

Types of Electronic Dog Training Collars

There are three main types of electronic dog training collars.

1 These the manual collar that needs a person to press a button to activate the electrodes.

2 The collar that is activated when the dog barks.

3 The collar that activates itself when it comes close to the perimeter where the dog is not allowed to cross.

There are many risks involved in using these electronic training collars, both mental and physical.

There have been times when the collar randomly discharges electronic shocks on the poor dog even without it doing anything wrong. This will undo any good that the collars have done and will confuse the dog completely.

Another risk of using an electronic dog training collar is that the trainer may not be able to

properly control the transmitter and send out a shock that is too long or too intense that can harm the dog.

Some dogs that can tolerate smaller electric shocks may need bigger and longer electric shocks which are actually very inhumane.

The dogs may also learn that the collars are the cause of its discomfort and become unruly when the collar is off or may even refuse to wear it. Regression may also occur when the dog has figured out that the shocks come from the collar and behave only when the collar is on it.

Another risk of using an electronic dog training collar is lesions which stem from using the tight fitting collars. The lesions are not from the electric shocks but from the tightness of the collar which is necessary for the electrodes to come in contact with the dog’s skin.

Love and respect, patience and perseverance are the main dog training devices that a good handler knows are the most effective. Without these the other tools are useless. If you train your dog through fear and aggression you will finish up with an anxious, aggressive, unhappy, uncontrolable animal.

The basic dog obedience training collar goes by many names, including choker, choke chain, training collar, correction collar and slip collar. These training devices are among the most popular and most commonly used tools with both amateur and professional dog trainers.

While a training collar is a widely used tool, as with any tool it must be used properly in order to be effective and safe for your dog. Among the most important considerations when using this equipment are:

- How well the devise fits your dog. It’s essential that it properly fits your dog. If it doesn’t fit correctly you risk losing control in dangerous situations.

- Putting the equipment on the right way. There’s a right way and a wrong way to fit a collar, and putting it on incorrectly will make it both ineffective and potentially dangerous.

- Using the devise properly. It should be used as a sharp reminder to your dog, not as punishment. Avoid applying constant pressure on the choke chain.

- The weight of the chain and the size of the links. The weight of the chain should always be appropriate to the size and weight of your dog.

- The placement on your dog.

Sizing And Measuring

Determining if the dog obedience training collar is the right size is relatively easy. Ideally, it should fit snugly, yet comfortably over your dog’s head. Like my father used to say about tightening a bolt, it shouldn’t be too tight, but it shouldn’t be too loose either. Too tight and it’ll be difficult to get on and off. On the other hand, too loose and it can potentially slip off when your dog lowers his head.

Measure your dog’s neck with a tape measure, then add 2 to 3 inches. For example, if your dog has a neck 12″ in diameter, you would want to buy a collar that’s 14″ in length. Chain slip collars are generally sized in two inch increments.

Proper Fitting

When fitting a correction collar, the part of the chain which is connected to the leash should be on the top of the dog’s neck. With this arrangement, it releases the instant the leash is loosened. Training collars are only effective when they tighten or loosen easily and quickly. Tightening is the first step of any correction, loosening is the second step.

If the part of the correction collar that’s attached to the leash is not on the top of the dog’s neck, it can still become taunt, but it generally won’t become loose again. This constant pressure on your dog’s neck initiates a counter response on the part of the animal, and your dog will quickly learn to pull and strain against the leash.

Also, if the accompanying lead is too long it can require a great deal of skill on your part to use correctly. So make sure you use a length that gives you comfortable control.

Finally, it’s important to purchase a dog obedience training collar that’s well made and strong. The extra expense will easily pay for itself by keeping both you and your dog safer.
