www.bighoneydog.com / Honey the Great Dane ‘re-learns’ her “house rules” in her new home in Brisbane. Honey was taught these rules from Day 1 at home as a baby puppy – really worthwhile putting in the time & effort to train these sorts of “house rules” as it makes the dog much easier & safer to live with. No worries about bolting out the door and running into the street or ‘counter-surfing’! Much easier to start young than to try & correct bad habits later. Just need some repetition & consistency in the beginning and some “refresher training” in new environments and the dog will stick to good habits. Having these same rules as the old home actually helped Honey settle quicker into her new one, as dogs like the security of consistent boundaries & routines.

Question by Sarah: Any suggestions on a good book about training a dog to come off leash?
I’m trying hard to teach my dog to be an off-leash dog. She has been very good! But we need to work on her distractions. She doesn’t have any distractions that are so severe that I cannot call her off of them. She can occasionally be called off a squirrel, so I know it is definitely possible to have her as an off leash dog.

Any suggestions on books that deal with training a dog to behave off leash?

Best answer:

Answer by Cookie
You need to do a whole lot of training before allowing your dog freedom off the leash. Here is a great site to start you off on the right foot;

click on “Articles” next to the picture.
Here is a great site for training books;

http://www.dogwise.com/search.cfm

Pat Miller (peaceable paws site); Diane Bauman, Terri Arnold, are all excellent trainers and have several books out that might be helpful to you.

When I have my poodle a nursing home near Sarasota, Fla., was seriously deficient in training dogs in need. However, obedience training is not anything Lily needed. First, Lily had a home.

Lily was a happy girl. A host family took after the puppy mill where he was a farmer must go. Apparently, it has not worked well in the Labradoodle breeding program. His family home, took a month to clean and repeatedly before being released for approval.

When I read it was pink. I thought it was beautiful, but it turns out he was sick. A flea infestation, malnutrition and extreme again pink coat. It took months for high quality dog food and hygiene products for Lily, her natural color back to white sand beach.

Lily, while improving health, I wrote in obedience training. Lily had some bad habits. I do not think it was a house across from his nursing home, or even a family lives, so they do not know the ropes. He was nervous, not when it is called, left, and not to sit on command. But worst of all, Lily was a biter. If these new people who met approached them, circling around and bit his thigh. ” Looks like fun, biting his buttocks, but he was serious. I knew I could get into trouble, sometimes shocking, and may lose even if it can prevent a bite.

Lily’s adoptive mother told me that the excellent dog training in Sarasota, but lived far away. So I asked the pet store and they sent me to a place to park the trainer, obedience training the dog in the room.

I wish I could say, Lily was a good student. To get along with other adult dogs and puppies, but his attention was very limited. I assumed it was rescued dogs, I knew that often require an extraordinary amount of attention and care, before settling down, so I had reasonable expectations for the training of the dog. Dog trainer to understand the needs of dogs and has survived good suggestions for the formation of Lily and the general improvement in their behavior.

Some dogs need more than one session of obedience training. I thought it useful to use a variety of techniques, training and trainers. Dogs must adapt to adulthood typically six months to a year in their new home, especially if their first years were difficult. That was certainly the case with Lily. Two years ago I accepted. Fits like a charm. I still can not come, but it’s better to leave. She does not bite, why not give them the opportunity. Above all, an admirer and a member of the family of plush.

The other day a boy Dog Walker told me how she was brutally Basset Hound on a leash, so he had no dog training, and Leo Leo will not form. I think not. Dog obedience classes are not magic, do not become a dog Lassie, but it can make the difference between a painful tear and a relaxing stroll. David Ramsey is an author of Majon International, a global marketing business on the Internet more popular on the Internet.

Okay,

So I asked a question a couple days ago about socializing/training my dogs, and after looking around and reading some books I already have, I’ve come up with a list of books that I am going to try and get and then read them to help me with my dogs.

My list of books so far is:

-The Dog Whisperer by Paul Owens (Not to be confused with Cesar Millan) I am currently reading this – It’s a wonderful book and I love it so far!
-The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson (I just got this from the library, will be reading as soon as I finish The Dog Whisperer)
-The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller
-Don’t Shoot the Dog!: The New Art of Teaching and Training by Karen Pryor
-Clicker Training for Obedience: Shaping Top Performance-Positively by Morgan Spector
-How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks by Ian Dunbar
-Excel-Erated Learning: Explaining in Plain English How Dogs Learn and How Best to Teach Them by Pamela J. Reid
-Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs by Karen Pryor

I will also be buying a clicker the next time I go to the store so that I can start clicker training with my dogs. I’m hoping it will work as well as I heard it has.

Have you ever tried clicker training? If so, was it easier and more efficient? Could you please share your personal experience?

I know that it may seem like a lot of books, but I REALLY want to understand everything so that I REALLY know what I am doing. Does the list seem good so far? Do you have any other sugestions for books I should read? Are there any on my list so far that you think I should take off?

Also, even though it may not relate to this section very much, but is there any other way to rent one of these books other than the library? I checked my local library’s catalog and they have a couple of the books, but a lot they don’t have or the ones that they do have are aready checked out for who knows how long. I would buy all the books if I could but right now I’m trying to save up some money so that I can afford a plane ticket so that I can visit my grandparents this summer.

P.S. I don’t believe in hitting, yelling, alpha roll, or any other violent physical forms of training. I refuse to do that to either of my dogs.

Gosh, that’s a lot of questions all smooshed together, but I would appreciate all your help!

Thank You!
Here is the question I asked before:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag_G.MKl3V0EMJuP4sHC8xbsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090427192527AAy752P

Also, I wanted to add: Click to calm : healing the aggressive dog by Emma Parsons to my list of books.
Caitlin: Thanks about the hint on clicker training. I have read that it is importnat to “click” as soon as they do the command. I will try very hard to do so!
Ms. L: I looked up the Monks of New Skete and I saw that they had some intersting books. I will look to see if they are available at my library.
TJ: Thanks.
Do you have any suggestions?
