There are many dog house training manuals available online and in book stores and the best ones generally focus on the two main methods of housebreaking a dog which are the direct method and the paper method and basically most other methods are simply variations of these two.
Both the direct and paper method are equally effective and you can choose which ever one you prefer or a combination of the two. Sometimes however, your circumstances will dictate which method is more appropriate where you live.

There are many ways to go about house training your puppy, whether you are crate training him or her or not, the two most popular and probably most effective are the direct method and the paper method.
All good puppy house training manuals will have variations of these two methods and your circumstances will pretty much decide which to use in some cases. For instance, if your puppy is going to have easy access to the outside, as in your garden, the direct method is generally the way to go. If you live in a high rise building or somewhere where it is not as simple to get outside quickly then the paper method will be more suitable.
