When a dog misbehaves it is not because they are bad, it is usually because they are dogs and they are simply acting like the animals they are. They will eat the furniture and everything else that strikes their fancy, jump up on things and people and even bite the hands that feed them. While dog obedience training may not solve every issue of behavior you have with your dog, it is a way of helping the dog understand what your expectations are.

Every dog owner wants a well trained, obedient dog. You can enjoy your pet so much more if they are well behaved, and the dog is happier because you are happy with them. Here are a few great dog training tips to help you along the way.

1. One of the most important tips for training your dog is to start training early. Don’t wait for bad behavior to start. Dog Training Tips for the New Dog Owner

Let’s face it, for many people training their dog is a struggle that sooner or later leads them to just give up and let their dog do whatever he pleases. Then they ask themselves why they have such a disobedient dog. More experienced dog owners know that dog training is something that is always going on. Whenever they are with their dog they are always training him. Going for walks, playing in the park, even just relaxing around the house are all opportunities to teach.

Dogs by nature are curious creatures who get easily bored. If there is not a proper outlet for this boredom they will find something to do. And to a dog who doesn’t know the difference chewing up a shoe or digging holes in the yard is neither good nor bad. It’s just something to do. The more a dog learns to please himself and do whatever he wants the less control his owner will have. A disobedient dog does not just happen; by ignoring, mistreating or being lackadaisical about training him he will learn all sorts of bad behaviors all by himself.

Adam,

I received a surprise Christmas present last year in the form of a 4 year old female shepherd mix that my wife and daughter decided I needed to replace my long time pet who had to be put down last summer. She really is a beautiful dog, but the shelter fibbed to us when they said she was good with other dogs and cats. She has been rather aggressive with them. We are 6 months into this relationship now and she is much better. I guess she is more secure now.

The one problem I have not solved is her desire to run out the door and ignore our “come” commands. All this is to ask you: Will the techniques in your book and video series work on an older dog? I’d rather not invest the money in a lost cause. We live in the Arizona desert and she won’t last long this summer if she gets out and runs off again. I’ve looked through many of your newsletters, but didn’t find any mention of age.

Last night, our dog (female, 1/12 yrs, 50lbs – springer spaniel, border collie, pitbull?, maybe others) bit my wife on her arm. The bite did not hurt my wife or break skin (scared her a lot), but it was a deliberate bite. It occurred while the dog was on my wife’s lap and she tried to move the dog to another part of the couch. My wife is ready to get rid of the dog because she feels no amount of biting of this sort is tolerable. I’m trying to figure out what is acceptable.

We’ve had the dog since she was 9 mos. At that age, she was very mouthy, but it subsided with 4 months of dog training and age. It does not occur too often, but the dog uses her mouth on people’s hands occasionally. We’re still trying to train her off that habit.
