I’m wanting to start my puppy, Dixie, with some pre-agility training. I live in Dallas and I’ve seen some facilities online in the Dallas area that I’m considering. But I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about some good (or warnings about some not-so-good) places to do dog agility in the Dallas area.

Dog Obedience Training – Puppy Socialization

Puppy socialization is a very important and often underestimated part of the dog obedience training process – consequently it is important to start as early as possible in your puppy’s life. The reason why it is so important is that it will help to build your puppy’s confidence around everyday things such as humans, cars, traffic, joggers, noise and other animals.

By following a strict socialization program you will dispel any unnatural fears that your puppy has around other dogs, people etc which will also help to stop any unnatural anxiety which could lead to your pooch biting out of fear. By introducing your puppy to a range of different experiences your puppy will be less fearful and have a well rounded and more balanced temperament. Below is a short list of the different things that you should introduce your puppy to.

What could be more adorable than a tiny 10-week-old German Retriever walking down the street with its owner, pulling at the leash as it excitedly greets anyone who walks by? These little puppies put so much effort into seeing what’s going on and are almost always greeted with a pat on the head and a smile from passing strangers.

This is all cute and adoring, that is until the dog reaches a bodyweight of 50 to 60 pounds and is literally dragging its owner down the street on the leash. The once happily smiling owner is now gritting her teeth and doing all she can to keep the dog from pulling her down the sidewalk.

Potty Training Your Puppy Quickly

You might not believe it, however , you could teach puppies and older dogs
to go to the bathroom on command. Many pups can hear phrases which are repeated and connect them with what you need them to do. For example, when your pup is outdoors relieving him or herself, say “go potty.”

If you do this enough, the pup will quickly associate the phrase ‘go potty’ with relieving him or herself. This will train the puppy to go potty upon command. Word association is actually one of the best ways to train your pup.

Teach your puppy to stop with a target

www.sitmeanssit.com One of the hardest commands for a puppy is for him to stop while he is in motion. It’s a lot easier for him to stop and stay once he has already stopped, but getting him to stop while he is distracted or moving anywhere, is not only more difficult, but in my opinion is the most important command that a dog can learn. In this dog training video, you will see one of the many ways of using boundaries, barriers, placeboards, or markers as they are sometimes referred to, in helping to educate a dog or puppy in his early learning stages in how to accomplish this.
