We’ve started clicker training with the dogs and I’m loving it. Zoey, miss over eager, does extremely well because she will do whatever it takes to hear the click and get treated, so she is real easy to shape. Josie, used to me showing her what to do and then performing it for a treat, gets frustrated easily but more than makes up for it when she does get it (She’s a mirror reflection of myself – I’m so used to understanding everything instantly, and hate when I don’t get things right away. Such as dog training, I can teach kids how to solve algebraic equations all day but I’m still learning how to communicate with my dogs!). The cues Josie knew from our previous training she has down almost perfectly. But I’m worried about them becoming dependent on treats.

If you’ve used the clicker training method, was it hard to transition your dogs out of expecting treats, or after so much repetition did it stick with them? What can I start doing differently to make sure they don’t get treat-dependent?

My boyfriend’s the one mostly critical of training with treats, I’ll carry treats around all day long if my dog behaves well for them. I know you’re supposed to graduate from this, but hey, I wouldn’t work if there wasn’t a paycheck coming, either.

I have a Shih-tzu age one. He is very well behaved with one exception. He will dart out of the door and run. I know this is a game to him but, it’s not funny. If he is in the back yard (finced in) or in the house he comes back as soon as called. It’s only when he is beyond that scope he runs. I am so scared he will get hurt. Last night he darted out the door and ran like hell across the street and all around in the neighbor hood. He is very small only 8 lbs. He has been clicker trained but won’t come even for the clicker. We do call and click to to avail. I know it is wrong but I panic. He seems to think it’s all a big game. Please HELP.

I plan to have a new cue for come, I will use Here with him since Come has been used in a not so good way

i just adopted a 1 year old or so dog from a friend of a friend, recently. i was told she was trained to go potty on indoor pee pads. that said, the first 2 weeks or so i didnt use the pee pads, and just took her outdoors as often as i could, and she successfully went on the grass for two weeks.

now, 3 weeks later, i’ve taken her back to school w/ me and she has to stay indoors for hours at a time, so i have been leaving her with pee pads when im gone. the first week she didn’t use them at all, and would go outside when i took her. but this week, its as though she has discovered the pee pads and only seems to use those. i can take her outside, but she almost fights me to stay off the grass. i will wait for several minutes, and she wont go potty. then, a few minutes after i take her inside, she will go on the pee pad.

ultimately, i want her to be able to go outside most of the time, and reserve the pee pads for emergencies when i am not home.

what should i do? should i just take the pee pads away completely? ive been leaving them on the floor even when i am home. maybe i should just set them out when im gone?

thanks for your time!

well i am going to take my 11month old rott/lab dog,, to obedience training, its group training with other dogs once a week for 6weeks.

here’s the question, will he obey strangers?? because right now he is a good guard dog, he barks at people around the house, and is aways alert, will this obedience training change him?

also, i go hunting with him in the creeks, he digs out rat, and rabbit holes chases them and captures them,, will he stop this? he also catches pest birds, and gives them to me(no harm).

and we play chase games and wrestle and stuff,

so pritty much, will i still have a fun dog who obeys me more but still, hunts, digs, plays wrestle, and chase, and is a good guard dog and not listen to strangers

thanks verry much!

It’s not the leash that freaks him out. I have a divided yard, and he has no problems walking on the leash in the fenced-in area. Sure, he may pull, but he walks. However, when I try to take him for a walk outside the picket fence, he just lays down. No amounts of coercion/treats have convinced him to keep walking. Obviously I don’t want to pull, but the boy needs exercise! Any suggestions as to how I can get my dog to go on walks?
Okay. More details.

He’s an 8 month old Boston Terrier. I am the original owner. I live right on Lake Erie, so part of my concern is that he may be afraid of the sound of the water. Sounds silly, but who knows.

So still a puppy. Small dog. And he’s always been mine.
Still more details. I’ve tried both a harness and a head-collar. He still lays down.
