When it comes to dog training, agility is one of the main aspects that are greatly considered. Agility is a dog sport in which a handler and her dog run as a team through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. The goal in any dog agility competition is to execute each piece of equipment correctly without any disqualifications. There are several national and international agility organizations with each having its own regulations and standards for its agility equipment.

Basically, an agility course is rather like an obstacle course with standard elements that each dog must pass through in order to complete the run and receive a qualifying score. If a single element is missed, the team is disqualified. This course consists of jumps, hoops and obstacles that you can set up for yourself. You can visit your local pet shop for this equipment. The basic elements of dog agility equipment are:

The Weave Poles are a series of thin poles attached to a straight plank base.
The A Frame is a ramp with a strong incline and equal decline. A-frame is painted a bright color, usually yellow, forming the contact zone, onto which the dog must place at least one paw while ascending and descending.
The Dog Walk is another type of ramp. The two end planks form ramps leading up to and down from the center plank.
The Teeter is a long plank on a fulcrum that each dog must mount at one end and walk across to the other end.
The Tunnel is a long tube each dog must run through. The tunnel is constructed of flexible vinyl and wire, such that it can be configured in a straight line, or in a variety of curves.
The Chute is similar to the tube at the entry point, but the rest of the chute is simply nylon without the hoops to support it, so dog are basically running blind through this element.
Jumps are the same as you would find at an obedience trial, and the pole height is set according to the size of the dog.
The Tire is suspended on a frame and each dog must jump through it on its way around the course.

Dog Obedience Training

There are few things that are more frustrating than having an ill mannered,a ggressive dog around the house. Proper, early training will insure that you will not face what may become serious problems as the dog begins to mature. There is nothing funny about having a dog, big or small, trashing your home. Dog obedience training will help you to have a dog that behaves as it should, the way that you want it to behave. And, more importantly, because most dog problems are caused by owners that haven’t clue, it will train you to be a better doggy parent.

Step One

The first ingredient for effective dog obedience training to be effective is to build a solid and trusting relationship between dog and owner. And, before this can occur, a common language needs to be created. This can only be achieved when the dog obedience training that you are employing opens the way to learning, and provides you with the ability understand your pet and its needs.

Through dog obedience training you make sure that the animal always responds in a positive ways to your commands. The idea is to work with the dog in such a way as to ensure that the animal remains calm and will not develop anti-social behaviors. Exercises will help your pet create the best responses to stimuli and therefore, dog obedience training works for the benefit of both animal and adoptive family. Specific centers meet the requirements of dog owners who seek professional help in training their dogs. Though this is not commonly necessary if the owner understands the needs of the dog, and how to best address them.

Dog Training Methods

There are several types of dog obedience training; let’s have a look at the very basic ones. The most common and easy to put into practice are the reward-based and the leash training types. The latter is considered to belong to the traditional dog obedience training used at first in military facilities. For such practical purposes, the leash dog obedience training has more advantages than the food reward, since it finds better adaptation to the task or mission the animal has to face. The collars bring mild or even hard correction, yet, make sure that you don’t use it ineffectively.

The leash dog obedience training teaches the animal to obey to collar control. You will need to remember that the leash is just the first step into developing the skills to get the dog obey under no matter what circumstances and relying on other tools as well. This type of dog obedience training establishes the hierarchy or the leadership in the dog’s life and the relation you develop with the dog very much depends on this aspect. Now, let’s see how the reward dog obedience training system works. Commands given to the animal and properly executed are rewarded.

Thus, the pet associates a specific positive behavior with certain rewards, caresses, a toy or usually food. Behavior patterns develop along these lines as dog obedience training pursues a mutual understanding between pet and owner. Ridding a dog of wanted behaviors is best accomplished by never letting them happen in the first place if possible, but in the even that isn’t possible, say in the case of an adopted dog, more intense study is required. Some may decide to hire a professional in dog obedience training, but even here you have to be an active part in the process since you are the one to spend most time with the pet. Many find that learning how to do this on their own is much more rewarding.

Every dog owner loves their dog but training them can be a real nightmare for many people. There are many reasons for this including the dog testing the will of the owner and also the owner simply not being strict enough. If you have tried the traditional rewarding good behaviour method only to find you are making little or no progress, then looking at alternatives such as the electric shock collar might be worth it. These collars have been around for a few decades already but for smaller dogs these collars were simply too strong because there wasn’t an adjustment for shock levels. Professionals in the dog training industry used these collars to train hunting dogs however now there are electric shock collars that are much better designed for the domestic dog. When buying an electric dog training collar you will notice that there are two main types, there’s a bark collar and then there’s a beeper collar.

As you may have guessed, the bark collar is specifically designed to train your dog to stop barking. It does this by emitting an electric shock whenever your dog barks. Hopefully before long, your dog will learn to stop this bad behaviour. The great thing about this sort of collar is that training your dog can happen day or night and if you’re out at work then the collar will continue working when your dog is at home. Many dog owners find out that their dog has been barking during the day when no one is home and this can make your neighbors really angry. If you want to keep your neighbors happy then buying this sort of collar is very much advisable. The collar trains your dog when you can’t.

The problem with training a dog is that your dog cannot understand what you are saying. So you cannot simply go home and tell your dog that it’s been very naughty for barking all day and that the neighbors have been complaining. As intelligent dogs are, we cannot communicate with them that well. These electric shock collars are relatively cheap and there isn’t anything complex about them. There is a microphone which senses when your dog barks and this then causes the electric shock to be administered.

Beeper collars on the other hand are operated by you using a remote transmitter. These are much more costly to buy and are pretty complex in comparison. Instead of a simple unit there is a radio transmitter and a radio receiver attached to the dog’s collar. The benefit of this type of training collar is that it can deal with more than just barking. There may be other forms of bad behaviour that you want to get out of your dog such as digging holes in your lawn or jumping up on people. However with these situations, you would need to have the transmitter to hand so that you can operate it.

Whatever types of electric shock collar you buy it’s important that you ensure that the setting levels aren’t too high. The purpose of the collar is simply to make your dog uncomfortable; you don’t actually want to inflict any real pain. Only use the minimum amount of shock that you can.

2. Negative reinforcement is the least effective training method.

One of the dog training tips that most dog training professionals wish more people knew is that using negative reinforcement or punishment to train the dog is the least effective way to get the dog to obey you, but is the most effective way of making the dog fearful or aggressive towards you and others.

3. Making dog training fun also makes the training more effective.

Another one of the most important dog training tips to remember is that dogs love to please and are eager to learn in all stages of life, so making the dog training fun for the dog not only makes the training more enjoyable but also makes the lesson easier to learn for your dog.

4. Don’t be afraid to use small treats as rewards.

Giving the dog a small treat for a job well done will not hurt the training process and will make the training more enjoyable for the dog. The treat chosen as the reward should only be given during the training process and on the successful completion of the task the dog was asked to do.

5. Research training products extensively before deciding which to purchase.

There are a large number of different training products on the market today and some of these products are intended for a specific use, not for general obedience training. Some of the products will have features that are not necessary to the training that you are trying to conduct, while some others may have features that will make your training sessions easier.

6. Dog training takes time.

Just as you didn’t learn how to read in a day, your dog will not master a command or a trick within the space of a day. It takes time for a dog to remember and execute a desired behavior after it has been introduced to them, so this important dog training tip is to give the training time to work and the dog time to understand what you are asking him to do.

7. If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

This last tip of the important dog training tips is that if your dog fails to understand a training method or a command, try a different teaching method. Just like different people learn in different ways, different dogs learn in different ways as well.

I have an 8 1\2 months old Australian Shepherd, he is very friendly to everybody & to other dogs, trained & well-behaved at home. He usually gets 2 long walks and a play with his friends everyday. He is currently attending agility classes 2x a week and a basic obedience course (that makes him 3x a week at Dog School). On trainings, as soon as we enter the training ground, he starts to get wild, he barks a lot (w\c is unusual for him ‘coz he’ s so quiet at home) he jumps on me and is not following the “sit, stay & come” commands (stuff he knows already). I always end up having a short training time with him on the field ‘coz of his behavior. But as soon as we are out of the training ground, he is back to his “well-behaved” attitude. I don’t know what to do or what’s wrong with him. Anybody, pls advice.

Positive thinking and action has always been the way to accomplish and create good and this also applies to dog obedience training. Most people think of dogs as animals that can be abuse and use to release their anger. Dog have feelings and you can use this idea to train your dog to behave for you.

When you think positive thoughts to train your dog, your dog will respond. Dogs have a natural sense of what humans feel and think. So, when you use abusive action, your dog will get confused and not know what to do.

Dog may not have a lot of brain power, but they understand love. This is what you need to give when you are doing dog obedience training. Sometime people try to force change in others and this does not work and it does not work with dogs either. Once you understand this, your training will take new leaps.

Dog obedience training with positive reinforcement training allows your dog to learn positive behavioral patterns at their own pace without being forced to exhibit these behaviors. These are some ways to make the positive reinforcement training easier for you and your dog:

1. Give your dog the reward it wants. When you integrate an excellent reward to give to your dog, you dog will definitely pay attention. He’s not going to miss getting some more of that good stuff after he follows your instructions. Use his favorite snack and see him perform.

2. Give rewards at the right time. Timing is everything when you are training your dog. Give a command, if he follows it, give him a reward immediately. Delayed rewards will get confused training results. You dog will not know what to do to get that reward. You will lose control of your dog obedience training session.

If you need a tool for training your dog, then consider a clicker. It’s a small hand held metal device that snaps a click. For a clicker to be effective, you must click it immediately, when your dog performs what you want. Then give it a treat. You instill in your dog a change in behavior associated with a sound and taste. This is a definite good combination for successful dog training.

You don’t have to use the clicker, but some people like it. Use your voice as a clicker. When you give a command try to keep the same pitch and tone. Give a command feeling positive and strong. Don’t use this voice tone when you are not training your dog.

When you start with your dog obedience training, determine what type of command technique you will use. Don’t use the clicker one day and your strong voice the next. Always be consistent with the way you train your dog. This will eventually let your dog know that it is training time. If you make training fun, your dog will look forward to dog training time.

Some dog are very smart and some even appear to be human in the way they relate to you. But most dogs react to only a few words that they can understand. To teach new commands to create new behaviors, use your predetermined commands over and over until you can see that your dog is starting to understand.

Use love and understanding during your dog obedience training is what you want to do. You dog will sense if you are upset and angry. If he senses love, he will respond and try to make you happy by trying to do what you want. Take your time and love your dog and both of you will survive the training sessions.
