Will leash training a sled dog ruin their sled dog habits.?
We have aquired 2 sled dogs, from a deceased family member friend, we love dogs and were wondering if we could leash train these two sled dogs and not ruin their pulling(we think dog sledding would be fun) we will probably use a prong collar just for training.

You should be able to leash train them just also train them a command to go out so they know the difference. I also suggest using a head halter instead of prong collar it will give you better control of the dog.
okay well i have a husky puppy – 4 months… an i want to start training her at 6 months….. and i was also wondering if i teach her to heal will this be bad for her….but the dogs should know when their working the same rules do not apply…so no you should be fine… im not to sure about the prong collar though….this may ruin their sledding..use a normal collar and their favorite treats and trust me they’ll get it in the end!
good luck
Harness is completely different from a leash. With a harness and with a load behind them, dogs automatically go into work mode and things will just go back to normal. It’s like going from riding a bike to driving a car. We all still know how to ride a bike even though we drive everywhere.
Oh and if you are using a prong collar, your doing it wrong.
Dogs are capable of learning that on a lead they are not supposed to pull, but when on a harness they SHOULD pull. As long as you don’t use a harness when walking on a lead you should be ok.
Personally I think you can train a dog to walk on a lead without a prong collar.
Nope. I have dogs who run on a team all winter, and then get a bath and go to a dog show. They know the difference between a harness and a show lead/collar.
It is very easy to teach them that harness = pull, and collar/leash = walk nicely.
ADD: Sorry – I’ve got no issue with the prong collar. If they insist on trying to drag you, they need one. However, you may want to start with a regular collar, and go from there.
Absolutely not. Teach your dogs that collar and leash mean “heel” and that the harness & sled means pull. There may be a little confusion at first, but they should get the hang of it pretty quick.
Probably
You don’t need a prong collar- Just a plain old choke chain and leash. You can never ruin a dog by teaching them manners. I would suggest you find a trainer that can help you get started since they are rather large dogs. You can do weight pulling with them in United Kennel Club too, so that would be a fun activity for your family since they already know how to pull. Have fun with your new family members! Remember, Sit! Stay! Heel!
Loki said it perfectly. I have sled dogs that pull like crazy when they are in harness. The same dogs will heel and go for a nice walk without a leash. If anything I think that obedience training will make them better sled dogs. It keeps their brains more active and teaches them to listen to you. Teaching them down and stay when harnessed to a sled can make mushing a lot easier on you.
